The benefits of resveratrol, found primarily in red wine, are still being investigated, even though thousands of laboratory studies have been completed.

Resveratrol pills are now available as a health supplement and the compound is included in a few of the better daily multi nutrient formulas. As with most natural supplements, opinions about resveratrol vary, but so far, no negative side effects have been found. The benefits of resveratrol however, are many.

First identified in 1963 as the effective ingredient in the Asian Folk medicine called ko-jo-kon in Japanese or polygonum capsidatum in Latin, resveratrol was later found in grapevines and finally, in 1992, in red wine.

It is because of the believed benefits of resveratrol that many practitioners suggest drinking red wine (just a 4 oz. glass) with dinner. Resveratrol pills or supplements containing the compound are an option for non drinkers.

Although opinions about resveratrol benefits to human health vary, scientists know that the compound has antibiotic capabilities, protects plants from disease, fungus and viral infections. Like many plant compounds, it is an antioxidant, meaning that it protects the plants from the damaging affects of oxidative stress.

The reason that opinions about resveratrol and other antioxidants vary is that research results differ. Many researchers are not sure if plant antioxidants provide the same protection to humans that they do to the plants.

This opinion is becoming increasingly less popular, as research studies conclude again and again that those people who follow a diet rich in a variety of multi colored fruits and vegetables have less heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.

Antioxidants are the compounds that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors, each performing a specific purpose in the life of the plant.

There are many antioxidants found in nature and resveratrol is but one. In order to ensure long term good health and receive the most protection from life threatening and chronic diseases, numerous antioxidants should be included in your daily supplement routine. In other words, resveratrol pills by themselves are not enough.

Many positive opinions about resveratrol have been reported in major publications. There have been positive reports in the Oxford Journal and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. These reports indicate that the benefits of resveratrol to modern medicine and human health are multi-faceted.

Besides being an antioxidant, resveratrol is an anti-mutagen and a strong anti-inflammatory. An anti-mutagen is a compound that inhibits the mutation of healthy normal cells into cancerous growths and tumors. You are probably familiar with the term anti-inflammatory. Many common over the counter pain relievers are anti-inflammatory medications, but there are many natural anti-inflammatories.

Chronic inflammation is believed to be at the root of many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Synthetic anti-inflammatories cannot be taken on a regular basis to prevent chronic inflammation without risking other health problems. Natural anti-inflammatories, on the other hand, are found primarily in plant foods and can be consumed on a regular basis throughout a persons life with no side effects.

Since it is one of the natural anti-inflammatories, it is believed that the benefits of resveratrol include the prevention of heart disease, cancer and other diseases associated with chronic inflammation. These are benefits that resveratrol pills may also provide.

Other benefits of resveratrol are still being studied. It may have an anti-aging effect on cells and is being studied for its effects on Alzheimers. Benefits of resveratrol in cancer prevention, suppression and treatment are being studied.

A recent report in the Journal of Infectious Diseases states that resveratrol decreased the reproduction of the influenza virus in cell lines and rats, in other words it may be useful in preventing or treating the flu.

Although opinions about resveratrol may vary, there is no evidence that large amounts of resveratrol are harmful in any way. Large doses showed no adverse effects in rats tested.

In conclusion, the benefits of resveratrol to all systems of the human body have been or are currently being studied. Resveratrol pills may not be a miracle drug, but since most people take a daily multi-vitamin, choosing one of the better supplements that contains this compound is most likely a wise health decision.

I found some made from the muscadine grape at the Old South winery in Natchez, but all the rest that all the other vitamin companies is made from the root of the knot weed plant and I have been told it is imported from China. I contacted the research doctor at M. D. Anderson cancer Center and he e-mail back some regular vitamin suppliers. i know they use pharmaceutical grade from Canada but cannot find out.. Thanks for any help.

More recently, reports on the potential for Resveratrol to inhibit the development of cancer and extend lifespan in cell culture and animal models have continued to generate scientific interest.Clinical trials are currently underway to address this question and to also determine whether resveratrol might be beneficial in cancer treatment. There is an extensive and growing amount of work devoted to the possible links between diet and a reduction in the risk of breast cancer as well as other forms of cancer. Recently, reports have come in that resveratrol could inhibit a number of cellular events associated with the initiation, promotion, and progression of cancer.

Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging report that a natural substance found in red wine, known as resveratrol, offsets the bad effects of a high-calorie diet in mice and significantly extends their lifespan. Research at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Ohio State University indicates that resveratrol has direct inhibitory action on cardiac fibroblasts and may inhibit the progression of cardiac fibrosis. Furthermore, researchers discovered that the liver and other systems in obese mice remained healthy (when they should not have) and fat related deaths dropped thirty one percent for those mice given a Resveratrol supplement.

Research by Harvard Medical School Professor of Pathology David Sinclair, MD has shown that resveratrol extends the life span of mice by up to twenty four percent and the life span of other animals by as much as fifty nine percent. Another way this research differs from earlier work is that it looks specifically at the expression of genes known to be affected by aging in several important tissue types. The group explored the influence of the agent on heart, muscle and brain by looking for changes in gene expression in those tissues.

Insulin and glucose levels in mice on the high fat plus resveratrol diet were closer to the mice on standard diet than to the mice on the high fat diet. Resveratrol again demonstrated changes associated with longer lifespan, including increased insulin sensitivity, reduced insulin like growth factor-1 levels, increased AMP activated protein kinase and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1alpha activity, increased mitochondrial number, and improved motor function. But, in contrast resveratrol treatment had no significant effect on body weight, serum cholesterol, radial bone growth, epithelial cell height, or messenger RNA levels for insulin-like growth factor I.

Resveratrol supplements on the market today may contain anywhere from 10 to 150 mg of resveratrol per pill, but the effective doses for chronic disease prevention in humans are not known. Resveratrol is not known to be toxic or cause adverse effects in humans, but there have been only a few controlled clinical trials to date. However since there aren’t studies in humans, it’s impossible to say how much resveratrol is needed to create health benefits.

The amount of Resveratrol in food varies greatly. Of course, understanding exactly how procyanidins work in the human body remains to be investigated, and the researchers plan to dose people with the compound in a future clinical trial. Resveratrol is a good antioxidant in any potency to help reduce oxidative stress, improving the immune system, cardiovascular system, and all other parts of the body that benefit from antioxidants.

There’s now good evidence that it’s not just in fruits and vegetables that health promoting anti-oxidant flavonoids are to be found. These powerful compounds have also been identified in tea, particularly green tea, red wine, beer and even chocolate. One of the most powerful of these compounds is called resveratrol and is found in red wine and several varieties of dark berries and fruits. So if you’ve ever suspected that many of those who advocate healthy diets are motivated more by denying you your little pleasures than a genuine interest in your well being, now may be the time to take a little revenge.

Flavonoids occur widely in fruits and vegetables and their principal function appears to be to protect these plants from disease and the damage which may be caused to them by extremes of light or heat. It has long been suspected, however, that the well established health protecting and curative properties of the many plants commonly used in folk remedies for humans may also be due to flavonoids. And there is now abundant evidence to support the idea that certain flavonoids, particularly those of the polyphenol type such as resveratrol, possess potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Two of the biggest premature killers in the affluent Western world, as well as major causes of disability and early loss of independence, are stroke and heart disease. Both frequently follow on the development of the cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, otherwise known as hardening of the arteries, and it is known that the oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), the blood fats known as “bad cholesterol”, is one of the major causes of this condition. The prevention of LDL oxidation is one of the key functions of vitamin E, the body’s most important fat-soluble anti-oxidant, but antioxidant flavonoids are also known to play a role. Consistent research findings confirming this benefit of flavonoid anti-oxidants have led successive governments and health agencies to urge the public to consume at least five daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the evidence indeed suggests that such high flavonoid diets are linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and perhaps even some cancers. They go as far as to suggest that a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate are fine and heaslthy addidtions to your diet.
If you’s rather not indulge in a daily alcoholic drink, resveratrol is now available in supplelmental form.

But it’s not just the flavonoids in fruits and vegetables that may have these effects. Much attention, for example, has recently been paid to the so-called “French Paradox”, whereby France boasts a surprisingly low rate of heart disease and related conditions, given the preponderance of saturated animal fat in its national diet. There has been much speculation that the low rate of this disease, by the standards of advanced Western nations, may be linked with relatively high consumption of red wine (resveratrol), and analysis of the anti-oxidants in this drink, also found in red grape juice, suggests that the theory may have some substance.

And at least one major study has suggested that the incidence of stroke is substantially reduced in older people, otherwise a very high risk group for this illness, who regularly drink substantial quantities of tea, which is also rich in anti-oxidant polyphenols, but whose diet tends to be low in fresh fruits and vegetables.

As well as red wine (resveratrol) and tea, there is now also evidence that anti-oxidant flavonoids may be found in beer and even chocolate. But in fact this is not as surprising as it may at first appear. The coca beans which are the primary ingredient of chocolate are a good source of polyphenols, and were known to ancient civilisations for their medicinal properties. Broadly speaking, the darker the chocolate the richer it will be in the particular flavonoids derived from the beans, which are powerful anti-oxidant agents not commonly found elsewhere.

The latest research seems to offer good evidence that the flavonoids particular to dark chocolate (procyanidins) may have a useful role in helping to prevent the oxidation of the LDL, “bad cholesterol”, which is, as noted above, a key precursor of serious cardiovascular disease. Procyanidins also appear to work closely with vitamin E, the body’s most important fat-soluble anti-oxidant, sparing the vitamin to work more effectively, and may also help to prevent excessive clotting or “stickiness” of the blood. Procyanidins are readily absorbed by the body following the consumption of dark chocolate and appear to have a significant overall anti-oxidant effect in the cardiovascular system.

But of course it’s not all good news. You’ll be only too well aware of the health reasons why it would be unwise to rely on tea, red wine, beer or chocolate as your principal sources of dietary anti-oxidant flavonoids. De-caffeinated teas are available, however, and dark chocolate is relatively low in sugar and fat; whilst all the evidence suggests that moderate consumption of alcohol may protect against a variety of conditions, including heart disease. Red wine (resveratrol), in particular, is rich in the anti-oxidant flavonoids which appear to offer significantly enhanced protection. The potent antioxident resveratrol is also available in over the counter supplement form.

As always, the key is balance; and in the context of an otherwise healthy diet, particularly one rich in fruit and vegetables, there is no reason why these highly enjoyable luxury foods and beverages should not make an important contribution to your overall level of anti-oxidant intake.

Resveratrol has recently attracted great interest in connection with the the so-called “French Paradox” which has long puzzled medical science. As a polyphenol type flavonoid, it is in any case a very useful anti-oxidant, but many now believe it also to be the explanation of the relatively low rates of cardiovascular disease enjoyed in France despite a national diet traditionally rich in cholesterol and saturated fat. The French, of course, are also known as high per capita consumers of alcohol, particularly in the form of red wine. Recent research appears to have established that the consumption of alcohol in moderation offers significant protection for the cardiovascular system, and may even reduce the incidence of related diseases by as much as 30%. There is good evidence, however, that the resveratrol, which is almost unique to red wine may provide benefits which go far beyond those which can be explained by the effects of the alcohol alone. This is not surprising in so far as fat-soluble anti-oxidants are known to be important protectors of the circulatory system against damaging attack from free radicals, and the resveratrol and other polyphenols found in red wine are likely to be highly beneficial in this context. Laboratory research, moreover, has revealed significant anti-inflammatory and blood anti-coagulant effects arising from the action of resveratrol.

But there’s still more to resveratrol than this. It’s known that some potentially harmful compounds in the body do not become carcinogenic unless and until they are metabolised by particular enzymes.
Resveratrol has been shown in some laboratory research to help inhibit the activity of these enzymes and it seems possible that resveratrol may therefore have some protective effect against certain cancers.
Resveratrol has also been shown in the laboratory to slow the proliferation of DNA damaged cells, which have the potential to become cancerous, and to allow time for the repair or removal of DNA damaged cells before rapid and harmful proliferation can occur. Invasive cancer tumors depend on specialized enzymes to allow them to take over healthy tissue and also need to establish their own blood supply if they are to develop. has been found in the laboratory to have inhibiting effects on both these processes, perhaps principally because of its anti-inflammatory qualities.

Orthodox opinion, however, currently maintains that more large scale trials are required outside the laboratory before any protective effects of resveratrol against cancer can be definitively established.

But the anti-inflammatory properties of resveratrol may also have a significant protective effect in the battle against atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), a significant precursor of serious cardiovascular disease.
Resveratrol has also been shown to play an important role in preventing the formation of the blood clots which if they obstruct a coronary or cerebral artery may lead to a heart attack or stroke, two of the leading causes of premature death or disability in the affluent Western world.

And amazingly enough it appears that resveratrol may also have a more direct effect in terms of increasing longevity. A good deal of research has shown that reduced calorie intake may increase lifespans, including those of certain mammalian species, apparently by increasing the activity of specific enzymes.
Resveratrol has also been shown to stimulate these enzymes and to enhance the life spans of worms and fruit flies. It is not known whether these findings would be replicated in higher life forms, humans included, but there seems no logical reason why they should not.

To obtain a significant intake of this potentially highly beneficial compound from wine you need to concentrate on red wine, because only this is produced by a pulp fermentation including the red or black grape skins where most of the resveratrol is found. As a rule of thumb, the richer and darker the color of the wine, the longer the pulp fermentation will have lasted, and the more resveratrol and other polyphenols the wine will contain. Generally speaking it is those produced in the sunnier latitudes which will have the highest concentration.

No toxicity issues have been reported from the intake of resveratrol, as such, although problems of course may arise if red wine is used to excess to achieve a desired high intake. Supplements of resveratrol providing up to 50 mg are now readily available, however; whilst moderate consumption of alcohol is now generally recognized as potential boon to health, and to be particularly protective of the cardiovascular system. So there seems to be every reason to continue to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine of an evening. And your enjoyment can only be increased by the awareness that the
resveratrol it contains may well be doing your health a power of good.
