#9 Black Raspberries

Unless you order them, there’s a good chance you’ll never come in contact with fresh black raspberries. They’re grown mostly in Oregon and are ripe only 3 weeks per year. But, according to Ohio University, they’re jam packed with antioxidants and nutrients. In fact they boast the highest fiber content of any fruit and pair that with the lowest sugar volume. They truly are a star in this new list of superfoods.

While black raspberries aren’t a source of resveratrol, they are a source of anthocyanins – resveratrol’s counterpart in grapes. They’ve got a bunch of ellagic acid as well, but it’s the antioxidants that make this small berry a powerhouse.

#10 Swiss Chard

How is it that we grow up learning about spinach and broccoli and lettuce and we don’t gain access to swiss chard till we’re older? Here’s a vegetable that’s in the same family as spinach and beets, but healthier.

And it tastes good.

Just like kale, leaf lettuce and collared greens, swiss chard is one of the “greens”. For vegetarians and older Americans, swiss chard is a fantastic source of Vitamin K and Calcium both used to strengthen bone health.

And then there’s the antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber and minerals. As an excellent source of vitamins C, E, beta-carotene and the mineral manganese, and a good source of the mineral zinc, chard offers an outstanding variety of conventional antioxidants.

Black Rice Superfoods

#11 Black Rice

Did you know that one spoonful of black rice bran has more anthocyanin antioxidants than a spoonful of blueberries and better yet, black rice offers more fiber and vitamin E antioxidants, but less sugar.

One of the features that puts black rice on the new list of superfoods is that some of its antioxidants are fat soluble and some water soluble. That means they can be delivered to many different parts of the body.

The problem with black rice is that it’s not readily available everywhere. If you want it, you really need to order it. Otherwise you’ll go from grocery store to grocery store trying to find it. It’s rare, but great.
