Organic Wine Reviews: A Layman’s Review of Organic Wines

Our organic wine reviews are going to cover both Certified Organic Wines and those that qualify for the “made from organic grapes” labeling. Wines that are made from almost entirely organic ingredients, but not 100%, are allowed to be labeled “made from organic grapes”.

Certification is the consumer’s best assurance that the winery is legitimately organic.

Jean Bousquet 2007 Malbec Reserva Organic Wine Review

Jean Bousquets' Cabarnet Sauvignon Organic Wine Review

The vineyard was started in 1997 and is organic. They do add sulfites to the wine to help preserve it so it can not be classified as organic in by the USDA.

Although considered a Malbec, it is a blend of 85% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 5% Shiraz. I believe it is the addition of these additional grapes that take this Malbec to such great heights.

The color is a great ruby red that is almost black. It is very smooth and has almost a jammy taste of black raspberries with a hint of fig. It has a very low alcohol on the palate which is the sign of a great quality wine. It goes great with red meat or can be enjoyed by itself.

Sokol Blosser Evolution Organic Wine Review

Sokol Blosser Evolution Organic Wine Review

This organic white wine is a blend of nine different grapes: Muller-Thurgau, White Riesling, Semillon, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat Canelli, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Sylvaner. It sounds like it might be too much but the result is superb. It has a great light flavor and is very smooth. It makes a great spring/summer wine.

The Sokol Blosser vineyard farms is a sustainable and organic organization. It received it’s USDA organic certification back in 2005. It was the first winery in the country to earn the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for their underground barrel cellar. They even go so far as to use 50% biofuel for their farm tractors.

Chateau Maris La Touge Syrah Organic Wine Review

Chateau La Touge Syrah Organic Wine Review

Chateau Maris is a bio-dynamic organic vineyard from France. The 2004 Chateau Maris La Touge Syrah gets a score of 90 from Wine Advocate.

It is very smooth with a black currant, cassis taste and a hint of espresso. The wine is matured in 80% concrete vats and 20% in oak. This combination allows the wine to get just the right hint of wood.

It would pair well with veal, red meat such as short ribs, grilled foods or with a rich red sauce. It would also compliment almost all game meat.

The color is a deep red that is almost black. It is very smooth with a nice long finish with flavors of dark cherry and currants. It has a very low alcohol on the palate which is the sign of a great quality wine.

Jean Bousquet’s Cab goes great with red meat, pasta or can be enjoyed by itself.

Crios De Susana Blabo Malbec Organic Wine Review

Crios Susana balbo 2007 Malbec Wine Review

The wine has a beautiful reddish/purple color which is common for a good Malbec. On the palate, the flavors of black currant with a touch of spice and a jammy fruit smooth finish.

This wine is wonderful alone or can be paired with almost any food. It is a great value too with a price around $14 a bottle.
