In May of 2005, during the full swing of the bird flu, Annateresa Palamara of the Institute of Microbiology, University of Rome La Sapienza, in Rome, Italy was doing research on resveratrol and the influenza virus. Published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, they found that Resveratrol strongly inhibited the replication of influenza virus cells. Her study concluded that since resveratrol “acts by inhibiting a cellular, rather than a viral, function suggests that it could be a particularly valuable anti-influenza drug.”

H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine: Could It Be An Antioxidant?
There is no cure for the H1N1 Swine Flu, but the government has had great success with the H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine called Tamiflu. But back in 2006, researcher Howard Friel found out you may not need to get a shot to prevent the Swine Flu Epidemic.
In a report on PubMed written by Howard Friel called “A nutritional supplement formula for influenza A (H5N1) infection in humans” after the Avian Bird Flu of 2006 in China, Friel suggested that an antioxidant rich supplement could help prevent users from contracting the swine flu.
This newest flu virus is very similar to the Avian Flu Virus, perhaps this antioxidant supplement Dr. Friel describes could be a natural cure for Swine Flu.
He suggests that a combination of selenium, vitamin E, NAC/glutathione, resveratrol, and quercetin taken as a preventative medicine and throughout any infection phase may:
- aid humans infected with H5N1 influenza to survive with a reduced likelihood of major complications
- provide a relatively low-cost strategy for individuals as well as government, public-health, medical, health-insurance, and corporate organizations to prepare more prudently for a swine flu epidemic
- be effective in conjunction with the H1N1 swine flu vaccine and anti-viral treatments, and should be tested as such.
Annateresa Palamara’s study went even further. They tested the influenza virus in a petri dish as well as in mice. In the petri dish, researchers found that resveratrol administered as late as 3 hours after being infected stopped virus cell reproduction by 90%. The level of virus found in the lungs of the mice after 6 days was 98% lower in treated mice than in the placebo group.
Like Howard Friel, Ms. Palamara “For these reasons, RV merits further investigation as a potential weapon for combating the growing threat of influenza (i.e. the H1N1 swine flu epidemic).”
Resveratrol Protects People From Food Borne Illnesses
While the H1N1 swine flu epidemic hasn’t been attributed to the consumption of pork products, researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia conducted studies in which they examined the effects of resveratrol, ethanol and variances in the pH levels on various food borne illnesses like e.Coli.
In the study, red wines were shown to exhibit remarkable anti-microbial properties and did quite well inhibiting the pathogens.
Azlin Mustapha, associate professor of food science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, said “We hypothesize that these phytochemicals, reseveratrol being the main one, also play a role not just as antioxidants but also may have some inhibitions against food-borne pathogens.”
